Written Statement

The Göttingen Historical Music Series looks back on 17 years of successfully inviting highly talented international early music ensembles to Lower Saxony. The extraordinary musical performances of the ensembles have delighted audiences and top-class juries alike.

The federal state of Lower Saxony is extremely proud to host a competition of such high artistic calibre. This year, the new concept of the göttingen händel competition, will further increase the lustre of the competition. Its integration into the Handel Festival period enables the young musicians to come together in a professional festival environment, benefitting from both the presence of numerous visitors and the opportunity to attend the attractive festival programme in person. The competition offers all ensembles a stepping-stone into an international career.

The cooperation of the Göttingen International Handel Festival with an international network of partners, the European ‘eeemerging’ project, ensures that Europe’s best up-and-coming early music ensembles can upgrade and professionalise their skills.

This year’s Festival motto ‘Faith and doubt’ carries a dual meaning for the participants of the göttingen händel competition. It not only refers to the epoch-spanning musical involvement with the theme, but also harbours a very personal aspect: faith, as much as doubt, can be a stimulus, an inducement to keep on developing one’s talent and to tackle new musical challenges. The results will show during the competition and, most convincingly, at the prizewinners’ concert.

May all participating ensembles overcome their doubts; may they have faith in themselves; and may they participate joyfully and with great motivation in this highly exacting competition.
